Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the right to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the practice currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
