When Beachgoers Escaped Violence, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Location.
Alexandra Ching, a permanent local of Bondi, has always considered the renowned coast as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other others in the area, heard pops ringing out around the neighbourhood.
“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.
As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she heard someone coming up behind her. The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.
“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He moved towards something that surely every part of you would signal you to run in the opposite direction.
“Without a second thought, but just totally full throttle racing.”
An Iconic Image of Bravery In the Wake of Crisis
The image Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of courage in the following of the tragic event.
Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help emergency personnel, law enforcement and ambulance crews caring for dozens of those hurt.
Local Response and Solidarity
Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to emerge from the community, with the patrol base next to the scene of the violence transforming into a makeshift hospital. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including entering the ocean to assist people who were struggling.
In the days after the attack, comments of appreciation flooded in. An online statement expressed gratitude for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always overcome darkness”.
The team of beach patrol issued a communication, saying they were “processing what occurred”.
“Thank you all for your thoughtful sentiments and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the compassion shown towards our responders,” the organization wrote. “In time, we will tell our tales in the belief that it supports those impacted.”
Official Praise
Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many permanent lifeguards, stated that the crew acted heroically from the moment the shooting started through to late that night.
“People have shared so many moving stories, but the widely-circulated photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is incredible,” stated a council representative.
“These individuals show altruism every day in ensuring our internationally renowned beaches safe for visitors, but what we witnessed on that day should be commended.
“While we mourn and grapple with the horror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much light we have seen in the midst of such hatred.”
