What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
