Two Cuba-bound Aid Ships Reported Missing subsequent to Leaving Mexican Waters.
A extensive search and rescue effort is presently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Cuba.
Military Rescue Missions Launched
Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were transporting a minimum of 9 crew members, as stated by a military release.
The vessels had been expected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.
Background of Aid to the Nation
The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated national electricity failures.
"Both skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Recent Aid Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the country.
That vessel, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Larger International Climate
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.
Political tensions have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from different representatives emphasizing the complicated state of relations.
Responding to previous proposals, a senior official from Cuba stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the vessels and secure the security of the people on board.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
