The Denver Nuggets star earned the NBA's Most Valuable Player award in three of the past four years.

Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "heartbreaking" knee injury when the Nuggets were defeated 147-123 to the Heat.

Jokic injured himself towards the end of the second quarter following an unintentional contact with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

His teammate came down on the footwear of the big man, and he instantly fell to the floor grabbing his knee.

The star, that tops the NBA this season in rebounds and assists, recorded 21 points and eight dimes in the matchup before sustaining the setback.

He is scheduled for an MRI scan on the following day to evaluate the extent of the issue.

"Immediately, he realized something was wrong," said Denver coach David Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever that suffers an injury, it's tough to see, particularly a player as special as him. We will know more tomorrow."

"We will continue together. Clearly, right now, I am more concerned just about him as a person and the disappointment of experiencing an event like that."
