The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has opted for a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the initial match to determine whether the venue pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with the latter expected to miss out if Bashir makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
In July, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
