Citizens have assembled around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities postponed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.

A senior representative familiar with the discussions indicated that an late session of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance provision
  • Future administration of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's public square earlier, young a woman - whose sibling endured the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place feels like home now and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."

"Once we see all home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people gathered to demonstrate their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev stated: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around 70% of Israelis prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, area and zone districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the evening comes, the dread arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area said it had received the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area said another two victims had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south, health workers reported.
