On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
