The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
