Vince Zampella, the mind behind the wildly popular first-person shooter Call of Duty, has died in a vehicle crash in Los Angeles, California at the age of 55.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, the video game company which he helped establish.

The influential game designer passed away following his automobile collided and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in the Los Angeles area on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with his family and friends, his loved ones, and everyone impacted by his work," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts stated.
