Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a prominent honors show nears, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
