An informant has told a parliamentary probe that the UK left behind confidential equipment permitting the Taliban to identify local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Puts Thousands in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were told to change residences and alter their contact details to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.

Members of Parliament are looking into the Conservative government's management of a massive disclosure of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to flee the regime.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

A data file with private information, such as names, phone numbers and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak became known months later, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to move to Britain were posted on online platforms.

It appears there is this misconception that the Taliban are without comparable resources that allied forces use,” Person A informed MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can locate your exact position. That's precisely what the unit achieved.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to necessary encryption, the source declared: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research provided to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been murdered.

A superinjunction about the incident was put in force in late 2023 and blocked all details about it from public disclosure until recently.

Safety Measures

Due to legal constraints, the source and the non-governmental organization associated with informed affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and changed their mobile numbers. These represented the two main details that, if the Taliban had access to these details, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower disputed that an official review carried out by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to former occupations.”

Person A described disturbing abuse experienced by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had their arms broken to pressure households to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
