Rory McIlroy celebrates Spoty victory with double honors.
Moments before the announcement, a nervous thought raced through his mind. He admitted he was concerned, "Please don't let it be a racing champion once more."
"Tonight represents a fantastic night for golf," McIlroy declared. "Golf was honored in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can build upon that."
This time around, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The outcome was decisive, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to reflect on a blockbuster evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were honored as the year's best team.
A Whirlwind Schedule
Choosing not to attend the official reception, McIlroy was already thinking about his immediate plans. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to Miami.
"I've had a hectic 24 hours," he said. "I am anticipating a little bit of a break over Christmas."
Hunger for More
However, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to slow down, even after achieving the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a more to give in me," he remarked.
"Additional major championships, tour championships, international events, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the drive, that's the key."
Collective Honor
At the same time, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the squad honor, also praised golf's exceptional night and his great friend's personal achievement.
"Those are the moments that will remain with us for all time so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is truly special," he stated. "And to be there Rory win, I think he deserves it so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"
Looking Ahead
He is aiming to finally win his first major next year but he understands McIlroy still thirsts for more success. "As long as you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.
Football Loyalty
As he was leaving, one final question arose. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be convinced to do it again after his recent triumphs?
"Provided that they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a grin. "There is progress. There's a touch of positivity around."
On the back of a 2025 for the ages, it's no wonder that the champion golfer is looking on the positive aspects.
