RFU Presents Ambitious Strategy to Elevate Female Rugby and Capitalize on England’s Global Championship Triumph

The Rugby Football Union has pledged to keeping up momentum by revealing a five-year action plan designed to capitalize on the success of the Red Roses' Women’s Rugby World Cup win.

Key Goals of the Plan

Dubbed Every Rose: Our Time, the plan sets out numerous bold goals, including aiming to be the inaugural English squad to claim back-to-back global tournament wins.

An additional key aim is to increase participation to one hundred thousand female players taking part in rugby across the UK by 2030, currently standing at the existing figure of sixty thousand.

Economic and Audience Ambitions

The RFU is also striving to boost its revenues from the women's sport to £60m, allowing more investment in grassroots the sport.

Furthermore, the initiative sets out a target of gaining 3m loyal Red Roses fans.

“The stakes have reached a peak,” remarked Alex Teasdale, leading the women's sport division. “The potential has reached new heights, but inaction is not an option because the progress are now underway.”

Building a Path for Female Rugby

She highlighted that female rugby has advanced greatly since joining at the rugby union in 2011, when there were only twelve thousand five hundred participants.

Teasdale remembered that in some clubs, while women were not prevented, they faced a lack of welcome as well.

Despite the progress made, she maintained that further action is necessary to strengthen the sport, particularly amid a cost of living crisis.

Record-breaking Event and Long-term Aspirations

“Recently, we experienced an extraordinary milestone as eighty-two thousand spectators flooded through the venue at the stadium to see our national team secure the 2025 Rugby World Cup,” she remarked.

“Moving forward to 2030, we intend to sustain this drive alive.”

Challenges and Prospects

She added that the union operates in an context where funds are restricted, which can result in difficult conversations.

“Ambitious initiatives, particularly for the women's sport, inherently question the existing norms,” she noted. “Yet the truth is clear: the destiny of the game depends on the women's sport.”

Fan Engagement and Ongoing Focus

Meanwhile, the head of the rugby union, the chief executive, noted that of the 400,000 spectators who visited the championship, thirty percent had never attended a rugby match before.

“Maybe the figure that genuinely motivates us is that 90% stated they would like to return and repeat the experience,” he said. “However we should not rest on these laurels. We must continue pushing forward.”
