Prison Shock: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He contested the legal system and the legal system won.

A couple of months subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last appears jail-bound.

Anticipated Jailing

The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been under house arrest in his residence while a number of court processes and challenges proceed – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the coming days, during increasing talk that he will be sent to a notorious high-security penitentiary.

Historical Remarks on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the far-right former soldier displayed minimal sympathy for the country's inmates.

“Why should we offer these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “If you don’t want to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is not rape, kidnap or theft.”

Incarceration Location Discussion

Yet the possibility of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, a group of four this week toured the prison in an obvious bid to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.

Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old leader to be imprisoned in the next 10 days and was concerned his location could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal problems – the outcome of a near-fatal knife attack during the last presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be terrible,” he added, who also expressed concern about packed cells and the condition of prison meals.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating 40 detainees: “That’s virtually one square metre per prisoner.

“We conversed to the inmates and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the awful meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

He is not the lone figure expressing views prior to the one-time head of state's predicted detention.

Writing in a leading daily, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the biggest political injustice in its history”.

“It represents an wrong that eats away the souls of millions Brazilian citizens,” he stated.

Mixed Popular Reaction

This could be true due to the considerable backing Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. But his predicted jailing has also warmed the hearts of millions individuals who believe he ought to be jailed for plotting to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and even conspiring to have him killed.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the sitting leader's political party, commented: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive respectful handling – but dignified handling while incarcerated. He cannot persist being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the severe handling of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their rights. “Only now has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that human rights are not for criminals – decided to tour a prison to learn what conditions are truly like,” he stated.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, insulting treatment”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his expected assigned facility appears to be a nearby prison for officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro experienced while living in the spectacular leader's home, approximately 20 kilometers away.

As per reports, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre WC with a shower and a 130 square foot balcony. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and even a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” information suggested.

Political Responses

He condemned the talked-about plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
