Match Background
Forest vs Malmö and historical connections. The both teams have a special connection, also facing each other in Forest's previous European adventure in the UEFA Cup of 1995-96, but it is the premier competition final 46 years ago that connects these teams, with the record-breaking signing the English forward heading the only goal of a largely forgettable match to secure historic victory for the red half of Nottingham.
"Forest's famous bosses, modestly dressed amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench quietly watching the celebrations," noted the journalist. This represented an remarkable feat that it is hard to see being repeated – from Second Division to continental competition in three seasons."
One should note to consider Malmö, who became the pioneering and only Scandinavian side to reach the final under English manager Bob Houghton.
Tonight's game is a very different to that peak, closer perhaps to the earlier European encounter between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are absolutely buzzing after thrashing Liverpool at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since last month following the end of the Swedish league season. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.
Plenty of other action on offer in this live coverage. The Glasgow club have already been beaten by a European rival this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the 36-team Europa League standings at the midpoint of the initial phase with exactly zero. They urgently require a victory if they are to have any chance of achieving a comeback for a playoff spot.
