My feeling was I got a touch - Alex Carey on review reprieve.
Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated he believed he had edged the ball when he was reprieved on Decision Review System on day one of the third Ashes series Test against England.
Having been given a life on 72, Carey crafted a superb 106 to aid the Australians post 326-8 at the stumps in Adelaide.
The Incident
The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut to seamer Josh Tongue.
England appealed confidently, certain they had detected an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza was unmoved.
After skipper Ben Stokes challenged the on-field call, the footage reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a significant spike but this registered before the ball had made contact with the bat.
Gaffaney also said he was of the opinion there was a space between the bat and the ball.
Consequently, Carey was given not out.
"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," stated Carey.
"Being given out would have prompted a review, though not a confident one. There was a definite noise."
Ongoing Scrutiny
Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' throughout the series after a series of inconclusive calls.
England's bowling coach David Saker hinted the touring side may pursue this latest incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.
"So far we've let it go, but this might push us to take action," Saker remarked.
"There have been concerns about it for the whole series. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. It is what it is."
Personal Milestone
Carey's century was his first in the Ashes.
It was also an emotional moment for Carey, whose father died in recent months. Carey's wife was emotional in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by pointing to the heavens.
"A hundred on home soil with loved ones present is unforgettable," said Carey.
"The reason for my look upwards is clear. It's hard not to get emotional. It was a fantastic feeling."
History of Controversy
This isn't Carey's first brush with Ashes drama.
He was the wicketkeeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 Ashes series, which created a heated final day.
Speaking about his survival he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."
"I might have gotten away with one."
