Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has unveiled what is being called the largest changes to tackle unauthorized immigration "in modern times".

This package, modeled on the more rigorous system implemented by Denmark's centre-left government, renders asylum approval temporary, restricts the review procedure and threatens travel sanctions on nations that block returns.

Refugee Status to Become Temporary

Those receiving refugee status in the UK will only be allowed to reside in the country temporarily, with their status reviewed at two-and-a-half-year intervals.

This means people could be sent back to their country of origin if it is deemed "stable".

This approach mirrors the policy in that European nation, where refugees get two-year permits and must submit new applications when they end.

The government says it has already started helping people to return to Syria willingly, following the removal of the current administration.

It will now begin considering forced returns to Syria and other states where people have not routinely been removed to in recent times.

Refugees will also need to be living in the UK for two decades before they can request settled status - raised from the existing 60 months.

Meanwhile, the authorities will create a new "work and study" immigration pathway, and urge asylum recipients to find employment or start studying in order to transition to this pathway and qualify for residency more quickly.

Only those on this employment and education pathway will be able to support relatives to come to in the UK.

Human Rights Law Overhaul

The home secretary also aims to terminate the practice of allowing repeated challenges in refugee applications and replacing it with a unified review process where each basis must be presented simultaneously.

A new independent review panel will be created, manned by trained adjudicators and supported by preliminary guidance.

Accordingly, the authorities will present a law to modify how the family protection under Clause 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights is applied in migration court cases.
