Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
