Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to investigate a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using cutting-edge technology and game design, and an completely original story written specifically to fulfill the fusion of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

An Unexpected Turn

The news is something of a unexpected development, given that 2022 saw a modern attempt at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, industry whispers had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been under development as recently as March 2025.

Why KOTOR Matters

The iconic role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are known for their narrative-focused, player-influenced, and character-sheet-deep approach to Star Wars. The games were seminal enough that they inadvertently codified how people visualize the Old Republic era as a whole, to this day. The games bravely chose to question many tenets of Jedi lore that are often treated as absolute, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are true. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, veered in a far more grim direction by posing the question if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are revered by fans years after their release, but the sequel in particular is considered by some as one of the finest pieces of Star Wars media ever made.
