An extensive manufacturing zone located in the suburbs of the capital is addressing nuclear pollution after a government taskforce found presence of the dangerous element Caesium-137 at twenty-two production facilities within the site, which encompasses companies shipping frozen marine products.

Urgent Measures and Goods Withdrawal

The finding has triggered emergency decontamination operations and the relocation of nearby inhabitants, following a similar pollution alert in the US that was traced back to the Indonesian plants.

A major international retailer is one of the companies that have recalled products from its stores after the finding.

Investigation and Discovery of Pollution

Indonesian authorities initiated an inquiry after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in a shipment of chilled breaded prawns sent by an Indonesian company.

The FDA issued an advisory instructing distributors and sellers to dispose of the product and avoid selling it, even though the found amount was well under the agency's action threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 it had detected would not present an acute hazard to the public.

The authority explained: “The primary health effect of concern after extended, ongoing small amount contact (for example through consumption of polluted food or water over time) is an increased chance of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within living cells.”

Widespread Contamination and Medical Examinations

Radiation tests revealed at least twenty-two factories in the manufacturing zone were affected. The Indonesian team did not name the 21 additional production sites, but confirmed they would immediately undergo cleanup procedures conducted by the country's atomic energy authority.

The environment minister stated that residents residing in highly polluted areas would be moved until the location was decontaminated, adding that the safety of the residents was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also performed examinations on local workers and people located near the manufacturing estate, finding 9 people who showed signs for contact to Caesium-137. They were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to return home.

Decontamination and Isolation Measures

The affected sites will right away receive cleanup operations by the national atomic energy agency. Authorities have also selected the area of a scrap metal factory as an containment center for polluted goods.

Indonesia, which has no nuclear energy facilities or arms program, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the nation from abroad.

Source of Contamination and Trade Restrictions

A taskforce spokesperson told reporters that recycled metal shipments were the probable cause of pollution and confirmed the government would promptly enforce restrictions on metal waste imports. It was stated that vehicles were also being inspected for potential exposure as they traveled through the area.

About Caesium-137 and Health Concerns

Caesium-137 is a hazardous radioactive element that usually appears in the environment as a result of nuclear testing or accidents, such as Fukushima or Chernobyl. Small amounts are found in soil, products and air.

The amount detected in the frozen shrimp was far lower than FDA intervention levels, but the authority stated prolonged contact to even low doses of the element was associated to an elevated risk of cancer.

The withdrawn seafood was available at large retail locations across at least a dozen American states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
