Both Deceased Students Named in the Ivy League School Attack as Authorities Persist in Manhunt for Perpetrator.
Two students who died in the weekend's violent attack at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter persisted following the release by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect questioned in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also posted words of sorrow on social media, remarking: “It's indescribable. Thinking of her kin and peers, above all her mom and dad.”
An International Student
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the Ivy League university, according to relatives.
The victim's identification was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
What Happened
Nine other people were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Officials stated late Sunday that a man aged 24 taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”
Community Anxiety
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause new worry for our city”.
The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that entered the hotel recovered two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, according to reports.
The Wounded Victims
Regarding the nine injured, a single scholar was discharged from care, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
A private school, a private academy in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
More Condolences
Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only in her youth... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”
Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “She was famed for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, loved ones, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his promising future.”
