Arrangements for Trump-Putin Meeting Delayed Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has stated.

This past week the US president stated he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to examine the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held this week - but the administration said the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration withheld additional specifics on why the talks had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports indicated his talks with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming Trump had pushed him to give up large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Russia.

Nevertheless, on Monday the American president endorsed a ceasefire proposal supported by Kyiv and European leaders to pause the conflict on the current front line.

"Let it be cut the way it is," he stated.

Russia has consistently objected against pausing the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would simply constitute a temporary ceasefire.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat emphasized, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that encompass the recognition of total Russian authority over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

The Ukrainian president said conversations concerning the current lines were the "start of negotiations" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to avoid diplomacy.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to the Ukrainian military.

Strategic Factors

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader recently preceded reports that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader asserted it was the missile discussion that had pressured the Kremlin to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had proven to be a "strong investment" in negotiations", he added.
