Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has been led by 74 state executives, all of them male. On Tuesday, Abigail Spanberger shattered this longstanding tradition by winning the election as the first female governor in the commonwealth's records.

Emphasizing Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Criticism

Ex- US representative and CIA case officer succeeded with a campaign that stressed economic pressures and strategically targeted Donald Trump's policies rather than the person.

Background and Education

Born in the Garden State on August 7, 1979, she relocated to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at age 13. Her father was an army veteran who subsequently worked in law enforcement; her mom was a nurse and volunteer.

She enrolled in the UVA, receiving a diploma in literary arts. Post-graduation, she worked briefly as a substitute teacher before turning to a life of service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” Spanberger told attendees at a gathering in Norfolk, Virginia over the weekend.

Professional Path

At the US Postal Inspection Service, she worked cases involving drugs, abusers and financial criminals. She served search and arrest warrants, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then joined the CIA and focused on national security, serving undercover and abroad.

Life Change

In that year, she and her spouse, an engineer, faced a decision. Residing on the west coast, they were considering another overseas assignment. They took out a globe and asked their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she replied, because “all our loved ones reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger recalled at her rally: “And so we chose to shift from a path of service to country, to local engagement because she was right. All our relatives are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in her home state, she participated in an advocacy organization, which works against firearm incidents, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she resolved to run for Congress, which others told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had secured the congressional seat in 50 years.

“But I observed what Donald Trump was implementing with his authority and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my representative over and over again oppose the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to take action. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In Washington, she quickly became linked to the centrist group, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She concentrated on less visible matters: bringing internet access to rural areas, combating drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She quickly established a reputation for working with opposing parties and was often cited as the most bipartisan representative of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt turned off independents, warning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in tight races.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives a former CIA analyst and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a member of the “centrist alliance” in contrast to the progressive “group” of AOC.

State Leadership Bid

In November 2023, she declared she would leave Congress for a another term and would rather run for governor in the next election.

Her platform focused on ideas of civic duty, advocacy for education and infrastructure and defense of governing systems. Her federal service gave her authority on national security issues and she described government work as a calling rather than a career.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to withstand Republican opponent her challenger's criticisms on social topics, notably the assertion that Spanberger is an extremist on civil rights and transgender healthcare.

The governor-elect, who consistently argued that individual districts should decide whether trans youth can compete in school athletics, cast her rival as the candidate more out of step with the middle of the state's voters.
