A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
During the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, but once I got there, a major event was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were completely sold out.
As a visitor from Singapore, I considered maybe I could just sleep at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, closes all night. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded public transport and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the evening somewhere that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me at my peak for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a broke student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals like that woman.
I must have looked lost because a young woman spotted me wandering around the city and asked if I was OK. I shared my situation and without hesitation she suggested I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – an ideal turn of events, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had from her work shift. I had access to warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest to spend the night.
With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a woman letting a man she had only just encountered stay in her room. At that time I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – but still deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not study at ANU, and I never saw the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish life has returned her good deed many times over. We could all use more people with such compassion.
